Genus Paristiopterus


Summary:

A boarfish genus with two species, both found in Australia. Species have the following charactersitics; body moderately deep; snout becoming elongate and deep with age, dorsal profile concave; lips, skin of chin and lower jaw highly convoluted; teeth of both jaws in broad bands anteriorly, outer teeth small and conical, innermost enlarged and bulbous; vomer without teeth; nape in juveniles steep, adults with curved bony keel; scales absent from opercles and dorsally on head; soft dorsal fin rays not produced; anal fin with short base, margin mostly straight; caudal fin emarginate; pectoral-fin base in advance of ventral-fin base.
