Genus Pomatomus


Summary:

A genus with a single species found worldwide in warm temperate and subtropical seas, except for the northwest and eastern Pacific oceans.

Head with scales on preoperculum and operculum, absent elsewhere, rest of body fully scaled. Lateral line complete, almost straight. First dorsal fin depressible into a groove, joined by a membrane to the second dorsal fin; first two anal-fin spines mostly embedded and usually separate from the rest of the fin; pectoral fin short; caudal fin moderately forked.

Goodbred & Graves (1996) found eight genetically distinct isolated populations in continental regions.
