Genus Psenes


Summary:
A widespread genus in tropical and temperate oceanic waters with six species that are not easy to distinguish. At least four species occur in Australian waters. Characters include: body strongly compressed; head large; snout blunt, almost truncated; eyes large; jaws barely oblique; scales extending forward on head to between orbits; first dorsal fin high and rounded, originating above pectoral-fin base; second dorsal of moderate height, outer margin slightly rounded.
