Summary:
A triplefin with a tall first dorsal fin that is white in males. Large individuals often have a conspicuous dark spot on the middle of the second dorsal fin that is connected to a band extending down the sides, about 5 darker bars on the body, and a red snout and lower head.

Distribution |
Ashmore and Cartier reefs, Timor Sea, North West Cape, Western Australia to McCluer Island, Northern Territory, and the northern Great Barrier Reef to Moreton Bay, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea; also at Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific. Found in a variety of coral and rocky reef habitats including intertidal pools, reef outcrops, and on sponges. |
