Summary:
A pale shrimpgoby with five deep red bars outlined in pale blue spots along the body, the first across the gill cover, the second extending onto the first dorsal fin as a small basal spot, a deep reddish arc on the caudal fin, and a dusky bar below the eye.
The Redspotted Shrimpgoby shares burrows with alpheid shrimps. the shrimp excavates and maintains the burrow, while the goby watches out for danger. Both retreat into the burrow when threatened.

Distribution

Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to the Solitary Islands, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific, from Indonesia to the Line Islands, and north to Japan. 
Inhabits clear sandy and fine rubble areas adjacent to reefs. The shares burrows with alpheid shrimps, often the snapping shrimp Alpheus bellulus.

Features

Dorsal fin VII, 13-14; Anal fin I, 13-14; Longitudinal scale series 80-94. 
Greatest body depth 5.2-5.8 in SL; pelvic fins united by low basal membrane; median predorsal scales absent; side of nape with scales extending forward to above middle of preopercle; caudal fin lanceolate, longer than head length.

Colour

Pale yellowish on back becoming white on lower half; head and body with five broad brown bars; numerous blue spots on head and in pale spaces between brown bars; caudal fin with broad white upper margin; dorsal fin with blue and yellow basal stripes.

Etymology

The species is named for the type locality, the Ogasawara Islands, Japan.
