Summary:
A bright red cardinalfish with dusky scale margins. The Flame Cardinalfish shelters deep in crevices during the day and is rarely seen.

Distribution

Dampier Archipelago to the Kimberley region, WA, and the northern Great Barrier Reef to NE of Shoalwater Bay, Queensland, also Christmas Island (AUS), Indian Ocean. 
The species occurs elsewhere in the Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa east to Society Islands, north to Taiwan, south to Australia and the Chesterfield Islands (New Caledonia) in the Coral Sea.
Inhabits seaward reef slopes, often sheltering in crevices on steep drop-offs during the day.
