Summary:
A semi-translucent pale greyish blenny with a black ‘chinstrap’ and a black V-shaped mark on the pectoral-fin base, black dashes behind the eye and white spots on the body.

Distribution

Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia, to Gove, Northern Territory; also Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea. Elsewhere the species is widespread and locally abundant in the tropical east-Indo-west Pacific - from Sri Lanka to Vanuatu, north to Taiwan and the Yaeyama Islands, Japan, south to Shark Bay, and Belau in Micronesia.
Inhabits shallow coastal reefs, perching on boulders and live coral heads in areas of rich coral growth.

Similar Species

The similar Ecsenius stictus differs in having faint dark dashes behind the eye and rows of fine black spots on the rear half of the body.
