Distribution

Widespread in northern Australia, from the Houtman Abrolhos to the Dampier Archipelago, and the Kimberley Region, WA, also the offshore reefs of Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef, WA, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and reefs in the Coral Sea and the northern Great Barrier Reef to Moreton Bay, QLD; also Middleton and Elizabeth Reefs and Lord Howe Island, in the Tasman Sea. The species occurs elsewhere in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.
Inhabits coral-rich areas in lagoons and on outer reefs.
