Summary:
A reddish-orange grouper with broad yellow bars on upper sides extending onto dorsal fin, and broad yellow irregular bands on head. Juveniles are more yellow becoming dark below, with several white bars on the body, a large black ocellus on the soft dorsal-fin base, blackish pelvic fins, and a black area on the anal-fin base.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from Scott Reef, WA to the Arafura Sea, NT; also Christmas Island, Indian Ocean. The species occurs elsewhere in the tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits deep reefs on steep drop-offs, seamounts and offshore banks.

Features

Dorsal fin IX, 14 rays, fin membranes distinctly indented between the spines, Anal fin III, 9; Pectoral fin 18-19, fin length 1.6-1.8 in HL; Pelvic fins reaching to or beyond anus, length 1.7-2.0 in HL; caudal fin rounded; Lateral-line scales 60 to 65; Lateral-scale series 101-117, lateral line noticeably arched over pectoral fin. Body scales ctenoid, without auxiliaries.

Colour

Head, body & fins reddish orange; 7 lemon-yellow bars on upper part of body, extending onto dorsal fin; three broad yellow bands radiating from eye; juveniles more yellowish, with a large black spot on upper body and soft dorsal fin, pelvic fins and spinous dorsal fin tips blackish.

Feeding

Feeds on fishes and crustaceans.

Fisheries

Taken by sports fishers and in subsistence fisheries in parts of its range.
