Summary:
A pale greyish cardinalfish with a brownish-yellow or ochre mid-lateral stripe from the snout through the eye to the caudal peduncle (outlined above and below with a fine white stripe), followed by a black spot on the middle of the caudal peduncle, and a narrow bright yellow line along the back. Juveniles have a yellow body with a pale head.

Distribution

Shark Bay, Western Australia, around the tropical north to Moreton Bay, southern Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, East-Indo-west Pacific: Singapore and Indonesia east to the Philippines, north to northern Vietnam, east to Tonga.
Inhabits shallow inshore reefs, often among mangroves.

Etymology

The species is named for the type locality, Cavite in the Philippines.
