Summary:

A yellow-orange cardinalfish with about 5 narrow silvery to pale grey stripes along the side, the lowermost stripe on the head not extending onto the body.

Distribution	Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Montague Island, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific: Papua New Guinea, the Coral Sea and Fiji. Inhabits clear coastal and outer reefs, with small aggregations of juveniles in harbours and amongst rocky boulders, often in silty areas.
Similar Species	The Coral Cardinalfish, *Ostorhinchus propteruptus. O. propteruptus* differs from the similar Orangelined Cardinalfish, Ostorhinchus cyanosoma, in having a a silvery-bluish to pinkish grey body with 6 orange-yellow stripes. The two species may be confused in New South Wales.
