Summary:
A queenfish with two rows of 6-8 dusky blotches along the side (one row above and one below the lateral line), and a dark patch on the outer rays of the second dorsal fin.

Distribution |
Exmouth and offshore reefs ( Rowley Shoals and Scott/Seringapatam Reefs), Western Australia, to about Sydney, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea.. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific. Adults inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs, while juveniles often occur in shallow inshore areas, including estuaries. |

Feeds mostly on small bony fishes and crustaceans. |

Targeted by commercial and recreational fishers. |

Remarks |
Juveniles sometimes feed on the scales and skin tissue of other fishes. This is the queenfish species most frequently encountered by divers. |

Similar Species |
Differs from other species of Scomberoides in having the combination of two rows of dark spots or blotches along sides, the upper jaw extending to or slightly beyond the rear of the eye, and the breast scales on the middle of the body below the lateral line are partly embedded and sharply lanceolate (spear or lance-shaped). |
