Pale, straw-colored ground color. Opercle and snout dusky. Dark pigment distributed on margins of scale pockets

Distribution

East of Maria Island, Tasmania, to southwest of Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in temperate waters.

Features

Dorsal fin 13-14; Anal fin 11-12; Vertebrae 44. 
Body slender body, narrowing toward end of caudal peduncle; pectoral fins short, not reaching origin of dorsal fin; operculum without radial grooves; gill rakers absent from inner surface of epibranchial of first gill arch; swim bladder absent.
