Summary:
A yellow cardinalfish with faint dusky stripes, sometimes a dark spot on the caudal peduncle, and a tall pointed second dorsal fin. Juveniles are distinctly striped.

Distribution

Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, north to Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the East-Indo-west Pacific: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Indonesia east to the Solomon Islands, north to Japan, south to Australia.
Inhabits inshore reefs, sheltering in crevices on reef flats and coral slopes during the day.
