Summary:
A coffinfish with a pale reticulated pattern on a greyish background in juveniles, and fine brownish spots on the dorsal surface in adults - in preservative. The live coloration is unknown. The relatively long, slender illicium bears a small lure with many thin cirri, and retracts into a deep slender depression between the eyes.

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from SSE off Gabo Island, Victoria, and off St Helens, Tasmania; also on the Norfolk Ridge in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Caledonia, Vanuatu and New Zealand. Inhabits seamounts and oceanic ridges, mostly on the continental slope at depths to 950m.

Features

Dorsal fin II,0-I,12; Anal fin 6-7; Pectoral fin 14; Pelvic fin I,5; Gill rakers (first arch) 12-13. 
Characterised by having cirri present above the eye and none on the lower part of maxilla; 4-6 pairs of stout spinules bridging each neuromast; relatively long and slender illicium; elongate illicial trough, longer than wide; numerous thin brownish cirri on esca.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin reticulatus (= net-like) in reference to the net-like colour pattern of the body.
