Bald Notothen, Trematomus borchgrevinki (Boulenger 1902)

Other Names: Bald Notothen, Bald Rock Cod, Bald Rockcod
Summary:
A yellowish icefish with dark spots and irregular crossbars, and sometimes with spotted dorsal and caudal fins. All members of the family Nototheniidae, have specialised "antifreeze" blood that enables them to live in Antarctica's freezing waters. The species is cryopelagic, living near the icy layer beneath fast sea ice.

Video of Bald Notothen at New Harbor and also at the Cape Evans Ice Wall, in the Ross Sea near McMurdo Station.

More Info

Distribution

Prydz Bay, also off Adelie Land and known from the shores of Ross, Davis, and Weddell Seas so probably throughout Australian Antarctic Territory; Elsewhere the species occurs in the Southern Ocean (to South Orkney Islands), possibly circum-Antarctic, at depths of 0-695 m. A cryopelagic species - found on the underside of sea ice along the Antarctic shore and under thick ice shelves.

Features

Dorsal fin IV-VII, 34-38; Anal fin 30-35.

Feeding

An active cryopelagic predator - forages under the ice for prey such as copepods and krill.

Etymology

The species is named after C.E. Borchgrevink of Norway, the Commander of the Bristish Southern Cross Antarctic Expedition of 1898-1900.
