Summary:
A brownish duckbill with large dusky blotches along the lateral line, anterior part of spinous dorsal fin dark, and a distinctive black spot on upper base of the caudal fin.

Distribution

Off Monte Bello Sound, Western Australia, to the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory, and the Coral Sea off Cape York, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + 14-15; Anal fin 16; Pectoral fin 19-25; Lateral-line scales 42-54; Scale rows between lateral line and dorsal-fin origin 3-4; Scale rows between lateral line and anal-fin origin 5-7.
Head depressed anteriorly; lower jaw projecting beyond upper; maxilla with well-developed tentacle at posterior tip; lateral line descending gradually.

Etymology

The specific name caudimacula is from the Latin cauda (= tail) and macula (= spot, stain) in reference to the black spot on the upper part of the caudal fin.
