Distribution

Recorded from the Coral Sea off Townsville, and the Tasman Sea (near Norfolk Island) in Australia's EEZ. Elsewhere, the species occurs in subtropical waters of the southern hemisphere from the southeastern Atlantic to the southern part of the Coral Sea and New Zealand between 18° and 34° S; depth range 400-785 m.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin elongata (= elongate), in reference to the body shape of this species being the “most representative character”.
