Summary:
A pinkish to reddish scorpionfish relative with darker spots and marbling, often a large dark blotch on the side above the pectoral fin; a dark-brown stripe running from the upper jaw through the eye to the base of the anterior dorsal-fin spines, and numerous pinkish spots and several small black spots on the fins.

Distribution

South of Scott Reef, Western Australia, depth 187-206 m. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west-Pacific: Indonesia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan, in depths as shallow as 90 m.

Features

Dorsal fin XIII=XIV, 9-11; Anal fin III, 5-6; Pectoral fin 13-14; Pelvic fin I, 5; Gill rakers 2+11.
Body deepest at level of operculum; eye large; upper and lower jaws with villiform teeth; teeth absent from palatines. Pectoral fin large, extending to beyond anal-fin origin.

Colour

Colour variable: pinkish with darker spots and marbling; often a large dark blotch on side above pectoral fin; dark-brown stripe running from upper jaw through eye to bases of anterior dorsal-fin spines; fins with numerous pinkish spots and several small black spots.

Etymology

"It is said... to bear the local name of  Yama-no-kami, or Mountain Goddess, in local myththology a woman with wings, capable of starting a storm." (Jordan & Starks 1901)
