Distribution

Western Coral Sea from north of Townsville to east of Dunk Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia, in depths of 215-415 m.

Etymology

The species is named for Malcolm Sarmiento, then director of the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
