Family PERRYENIDAE


Summary:

The family Perryenidae contains the single species Perryena leucometopon, which was previously placed in the family Congiopodidae.

The Perryenidae is a scorpaenoid family with the following characters: compressed scaleless body; long snout with a small mouth at its tip; black band passing from base of first two dorsal fin spines through eye to chin; gill openings wide with gill membranes on both sides free from isthmus; two preopercular spines; parietals on both sides separated by frontal and supraoccipital; anterior portion of supraoccipital narrowly separating frontals on both sides; a strong process on intercalar; a ridge on metapterygoid; anguloarticular convexity present; three anal spines (Honma et al. 2013).

Family Taxonomy

Honma et al. 2013 found that the genus Perryena has a sister relationship with a scorpaenoid clade comprising the families Gnathanacanthidae and Pataecidae.
