Summary:
A whitish cardinalfish with 5-6 black stripes along the side, a short narrow dark stripe behind the upper part of the eye to below the dorsal fin, and no distinct spot on the tail base.

Distribution

From Shark Bay, Western Australia, and Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Timor Sea, to Byron Bay, New South Wales including reefs in the Coral Sea; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits inshore reefs and outer reef flats, usually sheltering in holes or beneath ledges, often in areas exposed to surge.

Dorsal fin VII + I, 8; Anal fin II, 8; Pectoral fin 14; Pelvic fin I, 5; Lateral line, pored scales 24; Predorsal scales 3-4; Circumpeduncular scales 12.
