Distribution

Off northwest Western Australia, Ashmore and Cartier reefs, Timor Sea, the northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the tropical Indo-west Pacific.
Often occurs around lagoon patch reefs, forming large schools that disperse at night to feed on plankton.
