Distribution

Darwin Harbour, Northern Territory, and Cape York to the Gold Coast, Queensland, with juveniles to at least Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, and Cape Jervis, South Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the south-west Pacific (New Caledonia).

Features

Ventral surface of lower jaw smooth, not covered with prickles or papillose villi and with cirri almost entirely confined to outer margin. Minute cirri on snout, those in larger patch on tip of snout and across lachrymal bones about equal in size to those in smaller patch on nasal bones. Fleshy pad on isthmus with its width about 1/4 to 1/3 of length.
