This species has previously been known as Melodichthys paxtoni and Fiordichthys paxtoni. |

Etymology |
The species is "named for our colleague John Paxton, Curator of Fishes in the Australian Museum, in recognition of his many contributions to ichthyology, both in research and curating." |
