Summary:
A mottled scorpionfish covered in skin flaps and tentacles, and coloured to match its surroundings with a dark triangle below the eye. Small juveniles have three white spots along the back.

Distribution

Northwest Shelf, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Coral Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef to northern New South Wales. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the tropical Indo-west Pacific, from East and South Africa to New Caledonia, including India, Sri Lanka, Saya de Malha Bank, north to southern Japan, and south to Australia. The species is common throughout its range along continental margins.

Features

Dorsal fin XII, 9; Anal fin III, 5; Pectoral fin 17. 
Interorbital space wide 6.8 in HL); occipital pit deep quadrangular, anterior edge straight and strongly angular; low ridge on each side of pit between tympanic and parietal spines; palatine teeth absent.
