Summary:
A bannerfish with a relatively short, broad filament on the dorsal fin, a yellow snout and three broad brown to blackish diagonal bands on the body - one broad black band through the eye onto the pelvic fin, a brownish band from the spinous dorsal fin to the anal fin, and a third across the rear of the body and caudal fin.

Distribution

Found in Australia from the Dampier Archipelago, Rowley Shoals, and Scott Reef, WA, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and Asmore Reef and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, northern Great Barrier Reef to Moreton Bay, QLD and south to at least Sydney, NSW. Also at Cocos (Keeling) and Christmas islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Found elsewhere in the tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.

Inhabits coral-rich areas of reef flats, lagoon and seaward reefs. Juveniles usually in lagoons and estuaries.

Feeding

Feeds mostly on coral polyps.
