Distribution

Coral Sea east of Carter Reef, Queensland, and off Myrmidon Reef. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
Juveniles are pelagic over deep water, and adults are taken in pelagic trawls at 30-130 m in the deep scattering layers. This rare species most likely belong to the migrating interzonal complex of pelagic species. 

Features

Dorsal fin X-X II, 22-27; Anal fin 28-32 (total elements); Pectoral fin 17-19; Pelvic fin I, 5; Gill rakers 5-6 + 1 + 11-14; Lateral line scales 100-150 (difficult to count), Vertebrae 45-47; Branchiostegal rays 6.

Stromateoid fishes with jugular pelvic fins, two weakly separated dorsal fins, teeth present on vomer, six branchiostegal rays, and six hypural and two epural elements in the tail. Pharyngeal bones armed with particularly long, strong teeth, much larger than jaw teeth.

Etymology

The species is named carlsbergi in honour 'of the Danish house of Carlsberg, patron of oceanic ichthyology for over half a century and brewer of a very fine beer'.
