Distribution

Norfolk Ridge and Lord Howe Rise in the northern Tasman Sea, at depths of 300–322 m.

Features

Dorsal fin XII, 9; Anal fin III, 5; Pectoral fin 17, all rays unbranched. 
Palatine teeth absent; second preopercular spine well-developed, its length longer than third or fourth spines; snout long, 12.8-13.1% SL and 27.9-28.6% HL; eye small, orbit diameter 12.3-13.2% SL, 26.9-28.8% HL; head narrow, width 27.4-28.3% SL; caudal peduncle, long, shallow, length and depth 16.9-17.6% SL and 7.1-8.2% SL respectively; predorsal length long 42.2-43.1% SL; preanal length long 74.9-75.0% SL; prepelvic length long 43.1-43.5% SL. 

Etymology

The specific name longirostris is from the Latin longus (= long) and rostris (= snout), in reference to the long snout of this species that is “remarkably longer” than that of Phenacoscorpius megalops.
