Distribution

Recorded in Australia from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to the Solitary Islands, New South Wales. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific.

Features

Meristic features: Dorsal fin VII, 10; Anal fin I, 8. 
Body slender, to somewhat tubular, depth at origin of pelvic-fin spine 27-36% SL. 

Colour

Body brown to pale brown with five narrow pale blue vertical lines on head and petoral-fin base.

Feeding

Etymology

The species name prolixus is Latin meaning 'stretched out long' in reference to the elongate body of this species compared with other species in the genus Gobiodon.
