Summary:
A pale greyish to brown moray with numerous whitish to pale brown bars on the sides, and a dark groove extending back from the mouth. With growth, the bars become mottled and less distinct, except on the tail.

Distribution

Off Carnarvon, Western Australia, and Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island in the Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, Queensland, to Minnie Waters, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean.
Inhabits reef flats, clear shallow lagoons, and seaward reefs at depths to 20 m.
