Distribution

SW of Shark Bay to NW of Cape Leveque, Western Australia, and E of Rockingham Bay, Queensland, to off eastern Victoria, and north-eastern Tasmania.

Etymology

The specific name brevicauda is from the Latin brevis (= short) and cauda (= tail), in reference to the short caudal fin of this species.

Halieutaea brevicauda Ogilby 1910, Endeavour Series No. 1 23: 138. Type locality: 36 miles south, 12° West from Cape Moreton, Queensland, Australia. [misspelt as Halieutea]
