Summary:
A light brown dragonet with small whitish spots on the back, and dark blotches and small dark spots on the sides. Males have a dusky first dorsal fin with a blackish outer margin and an elongate black basal blotch, with narrow horizontal streaks on the second dorsal fin, and a blackish margin on the anal fin. Females have a blackish first dorsal fin with a whitish anterior membrane, and an elongate black blotch basally on the second membrane.

Distribution

Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia, around northern Australia, to Tuggerah Lakes, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Guinea.

Features

Dorsal fin IV, 9; Anal fin 7.
Upper margin of preopercular spine with large curved points. 

Etymology

The species is named in honour of Russell F. Johnson, the author's father.
