Summary:
A semi-transparent pale pinkish to greyish cardinalfish with two narrow orange to reddish bars behind the eye, a small black spot on the caudal peduncle, usually a broad black band below the second dorsal fin, and iridescent blue lines from the snout through the eyes. Girdled Cardinalfish are bioluminescent, and usually shelter among branching corals during the day.

Distribution

Offshore reefs of NW Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Western Pacific from Indonesia to Vanuatu, north to southern Japan. Occurs in dense aggregations among or above branching corals in sheltered lagoons and bays.

Biology

Species of Archamia are bioluminescent, with internal light organs.
