Summary:
The Longfin Perch has a long-based dorsal fin, an emarginate caudal fin, and long pointed pectoral fins that are longer than the head. Males are pinkish-mauve with yellow spots and wavy lines, sometimes with blackish blotches on the upper body and dorsal fin, and yellowish fins. Females are uniform pinkish-mauve.

Distribution

Off Coffs Harbour to Bermagui, New South Wales, and off Rottnest Island, Western Australia; also at Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the temperate western-central Pacific.
Inhabits inshore and offshore reefs, the outer continental shelf, and seamounts, often forming large schools around islands, above pinnacles and deep drop-offs in areas with strong currents - usually in depths below 25 m.

Feeding

Feeds on plankton and zooplankton.

Biology

Protogynous hermaphrodite - individuals start life as female and change sex to male. 

Fisheries

The species is reportedly an excellent table fish.

Remarks

In New Zealnd, Longfin Perch have been seen in aggregations of over 200 individuals.
