Summary:
A pale bluish-grey to dark grey damselfish with dusky-grey scale margins forming narrow vertical bands, rear of body, rear of dorsal fin, tail base and caudal fin are bright yellow, pectoral fin slightly yellow; anterior part of dorsal fin with a dark patch and a narrow blue margin; a small black spot present of upper part of pectoral-fin base; head with bluish to lavendar markings below the eye.
This species was previously known as Stegastes insularis.

Distribution

Found at the Australian territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean; also in Taiwan, the Amami Islands, southern Japan, and Marcus Island in the northwest Pacific. Inhabits shallow rocky and coral reefs usually in depths to 5 m.

Biology

Males and females form pairs during the breeding season, and the males guard the developing eggs.
