Distribution

Recorded from Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, and the Australian territories of Cocos (Keeling) and Christmas Islands in the eastern Indian ocean. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the Indo-west-central Pacific from the Chagos Archipelago and the Maldives to Palau and the Line Islands.
Inhabits coastal reefs, lagoons, and seaward reefs, and feeds on zooplankton in midwater aggregations.

Features

Dorsal fin X, 14-16; Anal fin III, 12 - 13; Pectoral fin 21-23; Lateral-line scales 74-88; Scales above lateral line to origin of dorsal fin 9-11; Scales below lateral line to origin of anal fin 16-19; Check scales 4-5; Predorsal scales 23-30; Upper peduncular scale rows 12-14; Lower peduncular scale rows usually 15-17.
Body depth 4.1-5.3 in SL; head length 3.1-3.7 in SL. Post maxillary processes 2; posterior end of maxilla tapered. A small flat process on either side of ventrolateral surface of basioccipital, projection not ventrally far from ventral rim of condyle. Dorsal and anal fins scaled; confluent Supra-temporal band of scales at dorsal midline.

Similar Species

Differs from the similar Pterocaesio monikae (known only from West Papua) in having the centre line of the stripe positioned below the lateral line, vs. above the lateral line in P. monikae. The stripe extends farther forward in P. lativittata, usually tapering to a point above the centre of the eye, vs. terminating well behind the eye, generally above the posterior margin of the operculum in P. monikae.
