Gymnothorax shaoi Chen & Loh 2007


Summary:
A pale greyish to brownish moray, with large dark reddish-brown spots on the side in at least three rows, dark brown dots on the rear of the dorsal and caudal fins not forming oblique streaks, pale jaws, rictus and inside of mouth, and a yellow to orange iris.

Distribution

Australian Territory of Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in Taiwan and the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.

Features

Predorsal vertebrae 3-5; Pre-epipleural vertebrae 45-53; Preanal vertebrae 53-57; Total vertebrae 125-130.
Body moderate in length; dorsal fin moderately high, origin before the gill opening; anus close to mid-body point. Jaw teeth caniniform and generally uniserial, but biserial on anterior dentaries and maxillae.

Etymology

The species is named in honour of Dr. Kwang-Tsao Shao, "who has contributed greatly to establish the Taiwanese fish database as well as supervise and support for our muraenid studies".
