Distribution

Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia, to Port Clinton, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific.
Inhabits muddy to sandy areas in tidal streams, estuaries, mangroves and marine lakes.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin gracilis (= slender), in reference to the more elongate body of this species compared with that of the Half-bridled Goby, Arenigobius frenatus, which Bleeker considered to be its close relative.
