Summary:
A brown to yellowish-brown goby with prominent papillae on the head, scattered pale brown spots and usually four diffuse brown bars on the side, wavy oblique brown bands on dorsal fins, and pale and dark spots on all fins except the pelvic fins.

Distribution

Legendre Island, Dampier Archipelago, ond offshore reefs of north Western Australia (Rowley Shoals), to Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, Queensland; also the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the Red Sea and Indo-West Pacific: East Africa east to Marshall Islands, Tonga and Samoa.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I,9; Anal fin I,7; Longitudinal scale series 22-25; Predorsal scales 6-7.
Body depth 4.0 in SL; head with prominent papillae ridges; dorsal-fin spines tips usually with short filaments; pelvic fins completely united with well-developed frenum; caudal fin rounded; cycloid scales on nape, pectoral fin base and breast, becoming ctenoid posteriorly; cheek and opercle with embedded cycloid scales.

Remarks

Randall (2005) reported Callogobius maculipinnis from Norfolk Island, however this record is likely to be based on a different species (Hoese 2018).

Etymology

The specific name maculipinnis is from the Latin macula (= spot) and pinna (= fin), in reference to the whitish spots on the fins: "Fins all blackish or dusky-brown, barred or spotted with whitish."
