Summary:
A dark brown goby becoming paler below and overlain with black patches, several series of spots on the dorsal fins, a dark patch on the upper part of the pectoral-fin base, a brown caudal fin, and whitish pelvic and anal fins.

Distribution

Great Barrier Reef, Queensland - recorded from Lizard Island to Shoalwater Bay. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical; subtropical, west-central Pacific: Vietnam to the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu, NE Australia to the Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan.
Inhabits silty areas in estuaries, and intertidal pools.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I, 10; Anal fin I, 8. Longitudinal scales 44. Transverse scales 17. Head with several rows of papillae and dermal folds on snout, cheek and opercle; several transverse folds under lower jaw; longitudinal row of folds from corner of mouth and lower jaw interrupted. Maxillary not reaching eye.  Scales absent from nape anteriorly. First dorsal fin obtuse, middle rays longest; 2nd dorsal higher than the 1st, pointed posteriorly; pectoral fin not reaching anal-fin origin; pelvic fin notched, connected by frenum and membrane; caudal fin lanceolate.

Etymology

The species is named for the type locality: Okinawa, Japan.
