Small slender sand dwelling fishes with large scales, single soft-rayed long-based dorsal and anal fins, a sharp fleshy snout overlapping a cirri-lined lower jaw and eyes that rotate independently; rays of dorsal, anal, pectoral and pelvic fins all unbranched.
