Genus Conger


Summary:
Genus with with 15 species, up to three species known from Australia, found in temperate waters worldwide. Characters: Body robust, laterally compressed along tail; head depressed; mouth not reaching beyond middle of eye; jaw teeth inconspicuous, conical, in 2 rows with a few extra teeth anteriorly, those of outer row compressed and in contact to form sharp cutting edge; "premaxillary" teeth in patch anteriorly; vomerine teeth in small, triangular patch; gill openings wide, just in front of pectoral-fin base; lateral-line pores in straight line; dorsal, caudal and anal fins continuous; dorsal-fin origin above about tip of pectoral fin; pectoral fins broad, prominent.
