Genus Anguilla

Summary:
Freshwater eels all belong to the genus Anguilla. They spend most of their lives in freshwater before migrating far from home to breed in deep oceanic waters. Like all true eels, they have a distinct transparent leptocephalus larval stage. The genus Anguilla comprises about 20 species, four of which are found in Australian waters.
