Summary:
A pale yellowish-pink comb-tooth blenny with a dark brown stripe along the dorsal-fin base, two dark brown stripes joined by crossbands along the side (the upper stripe continuing through the eye, and the lower stripe through the pectoral-fin base), and a dark brown ‘chinstrap’.

Features

Dorsal fin XII.14-15; Anal fin 11,16-17; Pectoral fin 12-13; Caudal fin 13; Vertebrae 10 + 23-24. 

Dentary incisor teeth 45-49 (includes anterior canine teeth, which differ little, if at all, in appearance from incisors); posterior canines 1 on each side. Lateral line lacking vertical pairs of pores, terminating posteriorly at point between verticals from interspace between dorsal-fin spines 10 and 11, and vertical from spine 12. Cirrus present on posterior rim of anterior nostril; none on anterior rim. Dorsal fin deeply notched between spinous and segmented-ray portions. 

Colour

Dusky brownish to brownish-orange to above enclosing two rows of large white squarish blotches or spots, a black stripe through the eye continuing as a dark brown to blackish stripe above the pectoral-fin base, head pale pinkish with a narrow dark line along the lower head and posterior margin of the gill cover, and a horizontal dark line on the pectoral-fin base.

Feeding

Herbivore - feeds on benthic algae.

Similar Species


Differs from Ecsenius australianus in having a dark stripe on the pectoral-fin base, a dark, curved line on the opercular margin, and blackish anterior stripes and bands.

Etymology

The species is named for the French ichthyologist, Pierre Fourmanoir.
