Summary:
A sandy brown goby with dark brown and white speckling above, pale below, a brown stripe from the eye to above the middle of the jaws, about 5 pairs of black spots on the midside, and often irregular, more or less vertical, narrow white lines on the belly and lower sides. The first dorsal fin of males is dark with a pale margin, and the first spine is elongate.

Distribution |
Endemic to southern Australia from about Mallacoota, Victoria, to Denham, Western Australia, and throughout Tasmania. Inhabits sandy areas in estuaries and bays, often in association with seagrass beds. |

Dorsal fin VI + I, 9; Anal fin I, 9; Caudal fin (segmented rays) 17; Pectoral fin 15-17; Pelvic fin I, 5. Body slender, head broader than deep, cheeks not bulbose; eyes close together; gill opening on each side extending forward to below gill cover; mouth small, reaching to below front quarter of eyes. First dorsal fin of males dark with a pale margin, first spine elongate. |

Etymology |
The specific name lateralis is from the Latin latus (= of the side, flank), presumably in reference to the large spots “along the middle of each side of the body”. |
