Summary:
A sandy-brown goby becoming paler below with about five dark brown bars and many narrow white bars on the sides, and brown diagonal lines across the head.

Distribution

Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to Mallacoota, Victoria; also Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in New Zealand. Inhabits sandflats and sandy areas near reefs, in tidepools, estuaries and amongst mangroves.

Feeding

Feeds mostly small crustaceans such as copepods, decapod crustaceans, amphibpods and nematodes; occasionally consumes juvenile fishes.

Similar Species

The similar Southern Longfin-goby, Favonigobius lateralis occurs along the south coast from Victoria to Western Australia, including Tasmania, and differs in having dark spots rather than narrow bars along the side.
