Summary:
A stunning wrasse with broken bright  yellow and torquoise stripes along the side, bands and stripes on the head, and a yellow tail. Juveniles are blackish with a yellow dorsal fin, fine white spots on the head and narrow white stripes on the sides.

Distribution

Endemic to northern Australia from Shark Bay and offshore islands of Western Australia, to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. Inhabits sheltered and silty reefs in depths to 25 m.

Colour

Juveniles are black with a yellow dorsal fin, fine white spots on the head and narrow white stripes on the sides. With growth, they become yellowish, the narrow white stripes broaden and become increasingly blue. Adolescent Lennard’s wrasse are golden brown with 4-5 broad blue irregular stripes along the body that are a bright blue on the face, and break up into blue spots on the anterior part of the body. The caudal fin is mostly yellow, and the dorsal and anal fins have a bright blue basal and outer margins. As they change sex, individuals the colours intensify into a lemon yellow terminal male with a torquoise-blue dot and dash pattern.
