Summary:
A striking reddish-pink wrasse with or without a series of vertical pale fine white to yellowish bands and many fine vertical lines of varying intensity along the side, a dark ocellus on a yellow tail base, a yellowish head with blue and purple markings, and a bright yellow eye.

Distribution |
Reefs in the Coral Sea off northern Queensland (Lihou & Holmes reefs). Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, west-central Pacific. A secretive cryptic species that prefers darker areas on deeper reefs, often in caves and beneath overhangs on drop-offs. |
Etymology |
The species is named ocellatus for the distinct ocellated black spot at the posterior of the body. |
