Summary:
A translucent greenish-yellow goby with black dots on the head and belly, a yellowish-green band with black dots from the eye across the front of the snout enclosing the nostrils, and a dusky yellowish-green iris with a broad inner white circle.

Distribution

Hibernia Reef, Western Australia, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species is widespread but relatively rare in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific: Red Sea and the East African coast to the Maldives and Thailand, Fiji, Tonga, French Polynesia (the Marquesas) north to Japan (the Yaeyama Islands), Federated States of Micronesia and Marshall Islands, southward to Australia and New Caledonia.
Inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs, living in association with large Porites colonies and branching Millepora fire corals.

Features

Dorsal fin VI + I,7-8; Anal fin I,7-8; Pectoral fin 13-14;  Caudal fin 11 (branched), 15-17 (segmented); Longitudinal scale count 31-37.
Body naked before rear base of first dorsal fin, the ; body depth at origin of anal fin 13.3–17.5% SL; body progressively compressed posteriorly; head width greater than head depth and broader ventrally; snout length shorter than orbit diameter; gill opening extending forward to or anterior to posterior margin of preopercle; no canine tooth at side of lower jaw; caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded; pelvic fins short, round, and cup-like, the pelvic spines short.

Size

Attains a maximum reported length opf 1.8 cm SL.

Colour

Body translucent greenish yellow, the skeletal features of body visible; head and abdomen yellowish green with numerous black dots; a yellowish green band with black dots from eye to eye across front of snout and enclosing nostrils; red of gill filaments visible through operculum; fins translucent; iris dusky yellowish green with a broad inner white circle. 

Fisheries

Not known to be traded in the aquarium industry.

IUCN Red List: Least Concern

Etymology

The specific name ridens (= laughing or smiling), perhaps in reference to the large mouth as the illustration accompanying Smith's description appears to show this goby “smiling” (Scharpf & Lazara 2019).
